Scenario: A child born on March 15 at 34 weeks gestation screened on November 15
Chronological age: 8 months (245 days).
Prematurity delta: (40 - 34) × 7 days = 42 days (approx 1.4 months).
Adjusted age: 8.0 - 1.4 = 6.6 months.
Recommended questionnaire interval: ASQ-3 6-Month Questionnaire.
Adjustment for prematurity is required if the child was born before 37 completed weeks of gestation AND the child’s chronological age is under 24 months.
The ASQ-3 includes 21 questionnaires covering ages 1 to 66 months: 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 42, 48, 54, and 60 months.
Premature infants have had less time to develop in utero. Evaluating a premature infant against full-term chronological standards would artificially indicate developmental delays that reflect gestational timing rather than neurological delay.
On the adult AQ-10 screening questionnaire, a score of 6 or higher indicates that a comprehensive multidisciplinary autism assessment should be considered, per NICE clinical guideline CG142.
