What Is a Growth Percentage Calculator?

A growth percentage calculator measures the relative rate of expansion between an initial measurement and a subsequent period. Widely utilized by venture capitalists, startup founders, and financial analysts, it reveals both percentage growth and multiple factors (e.g. 1.85x growth).

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the starting baseline value (Initial Period, e.g. Year 1 Revenue).
  2. Enter the new measurement (Current Period, e.g. Year 2 Revenue).
  3. View the percentage growth, growth multiple factor, and projected next period trajectory.
  4. Use the copy button to export metrics directly into executive presentations.

Percentage Growth Formula

\% \text{ Growth} = \frac{V_{\text{current}} - V_{\text{initial}}}{V_{\text{initial}}} \times 100, \quad \text{Multiple} = \frac{V_{\text{current}}}{V_{\text{initial}}}

Absolute growth is calculated by subtracting initial from current, then dividing by initial to find the growth rate.

Worked Example

Scenario: A SaaS startup increases its Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR) from $40,000 to $92,000 over 12 months.

Absolute MRR growth: $92,000 - $40,000 = $52,000 net increase.

Growth rate: $52,000 ÷ $40,000 = 1.30.

Growth percentage: 1.30 × 100 = 130.00% growth.

Multiple factor: $92,000 ÷ $40,000 = 2.30x multiple.

Result: The startup grew by 130.00% (2.3x multiple) with next period projected at $211,600.

Tips & Key Notes

  • A 100% growth rate means the metric has doubled (2.0x factor); 200% growth means it has tripled (3.0x factor).
  • For multi-year analyses with compounding, utilize the Yearly Percentage Increase (CAGR) Calculator.
  • Negative percentage growth indicates contraction or churn that requires remediation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate year-over-year (YoY) growth percentage?

Subtract last year’s figure from this year’s figure, divide by last year’s figure, and multiply by 100: [(This Year - Last Year) ÷ Last Year] × 100.

What is the difference between percentage growth and growth multiple?

Percentage growth shows the percentage gain above the baseline (e.g. +150%), whereas growth multiple expresses total ending size relative to initial (2.5x). A 150% gain equals a 2.5x multiple.

How is month-over-month (MoM) growth calculated?

[(Current Month - Previous Month) ÷ Previous Month] × 100. This is the primary key performance indicator tracked by high-growth startups.

Can growth percentage be negative?

Yes. If revenue falls from $100,000 to $80,000, the growth rate is ($80k - $100k) ÷ $100k = -20% (indicating a 20% decline).
