On standard 53ft dry vans (102" exterior width, 98" interior), two 48x40 pallets fit side by side per row.

Worked Example

Scenario: Shipping 6 stackable 48x40x50 inch pallets weighing 600 lbs each.

Rows of pallets: 6 / 2 = 3 rows.

Linear feet of trailer space: 3 rows × (48 / 12) = 12 linear feet.

Total Volume: 6 × 55.56 cu ft = 333.3 cu ft. Total Weight: 3,600 lbs.

Density: 3,600 / 333.3 = 10.80 PCF (Class 100).

Result: Occupies 12 linear feet of trailer at 10.80 PCF (Class 100).

Tips & Key Notes

  • If cargo is non-stackable, carriers like Old Dominion, Saia, and Estes rate the freight using 84 to 96 inches of vertical clearance, drastically lowering calculated density and increasing shipping costs.
  • Use pallet banding and heavy stretch wrap to compress loose boxes, increasing density into a lower, more favorable freight class.
  • Shipments occupying more than 14 to 20 linear feet often benefit from a volume LTL or partial truckload (PTL) spot quote.
