Slugging Percentage (SLG) Formula

Worked Example
Scenario: A baseball player records 150 At-Bats with 25 singles, 10 doubles, 2 triples, and 8 home runs.
Calculate Total Bases (TB): (25 × 1) + (10 × 2) + (2 × 3) + (8 × 4) = 25 + 20 + 6 + 32 = 83 TB.
Total hits: 25 + 10 + 2 + 8 = 45 hits.
Slugging Percentage: 83 ÷ 150 = 0.55333... -> .553 SLG.
Batting Average: 45 ÷ 150 = .300 BA. Isolated Power (ISO): .553 - .300 = .253.
Tips & Key Notes
- In MLB standards, an SLG above .450 is considered solid, while an SLG exceeding .550 indicates an elite power hitter.
- Isolated Power (ISO = SLG - BA) isolates raw extra-base power by stripping out singles.
- Do not confuse At-Bats (AB) with Plate Appearances (PA); walks, sacrifices, and catcher interference are not counted as at-bats.
