What Is a Swim Time Converter?

A swim time converter translates competitive swimming race times between the three standard swimming pool course lengths: Short Course Yards (SCY, 25-yard pools used in US high schools and NCAA), Short Course Meters (SCM, 25-meter pools), and Long Course Meters (LCM, 50-meter Olympic-sized pools). It applies official NCAA and USA Swimming conversion factors based on stroke, turns, and distance.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select race distance (50, 100, 200, 400/500, 800/1000, or 1500/1650).
  2. Select swimming stroke (Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, or IM).
  3. Choose input pool course (SCY, SCM, or LCM) and division (Men / Women).
  4. Enter your seed or race time (e.g. 48.50 or 01:02.35) to view converted equivalents.

NCAA Swimming Course Conversion Factor

T_{\text{LCM}} = (T_{\text{SCY}} \cdot F_{\text{course}}) + \Delta T_{\text{turns}}

Because 1 meter = 1.09361 yards, 25m courses require ~1.11x the yard time, and 50m long course pools have fewer push-off turns, adding turning resistance.

Worked Example

Scenario: A male swimmer swims a 48.50-second 100-yard freestyle in SCY.

SCY time: 48.50 seconds.

SCM conversion factor (1.11): 48.50 × 1.11 = 53.83 seconds.

LCM conversion factor (fewer turns in 50m pool): ~55.29 seconds.

Result: SCY 48.50 converts to SCM 53.83 and LCM 55.29.

Tips & Key Notes

  • Times in 50m Long Course (LCM) pools are always slower than 25y Short Course (SCY) because there are fewer wall push-offs and turns.
  • College swimming in the United States primarily competes in Short Course Yards (SCY) during the NCAA winter season.
  • Olympic Trials and international FINA / World Aquatics championships compete exclusively in Long Course Meters (LCM).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SCY, SCM, and LCM?

SCY is Short Course Yards (25 yards per lap). SCM is Short Course Meters (25 meters per lap). LCM is Long Course Meters (50 meters per lap, the Olympic pool standard).

Why are LCM times slower than SCY times?

A meter is approximately 9.36% longer than a yard, and a 50m pool has half as many flip turns and underwater wall pushoffs, where swimmers travel fastest.

Are swim time conversions accepted for official meet qualification?

Many high school and collegiate championship meets accept converted times using official NCAA or USA Swimming conversion tables when swimmers have not raced in a specific pool length.

What format should I enter my swim time in?

You can enter seconds and hundredths (e.g. 48.50 or 23.12) or minutes, seconds, and hundredths (e.g. 01:02.35).
