What Is a Twitter Character Counter?
The Twitter Character Counter evaluates posts against the official 280-character limit of X (formerly Twitter). It uses Twitter’s weighted text specification, properly weighting URLs (23 characters via t.co), CJK and emoji characters (2 characters), and Latin characters (1 character).
How to Use This Calculator
- Type or draft your tweet in the text editor.
- View the live weighted character count and remaining character progress bar.
- If your text exceeds 280 characters, review the automated numbered thread breakdown.
Official Twitter Weighted Character Counting Rules
\text{Weighted Chars} = N_{\text{Latin}} + 2 \times N_{\text{CJK}} + 2 \times N_{\text{Emoji}} + 23 \times N_{\text{URL}} \le 280All HTTP/HTTPS URLs are transformed to t.co short links occupying exactly 23 characters regardless of raw URL length.
Worked Example
Scenario: A post with 150 English letters and one long website link
English text: 150 characters (weight = 150).
URL: 75 raw characters → counts as exactly 23 weighted characters.
Total weighted length: 150 + 23 = 173 characters.
Remaining: 280 - 173 = 107 characters available.
Tips & Key Notes
- Every URL uses exactly 23 characters, leaving 257 characters for your commentary.
- Use the automatic thread splitter to publish long-form essays as numbered multi-part tweet storms.
- Adding emojis adds 2 characters to your count per emoji glyph.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long can a tweet be on X / Twitter?
Standard non-subscribed accounts have a limit of 280 weighted characters per tweet. X Premium subscribers can publish long-form posts up to 25,000 characters.
How do URLs count toward the 280-character limit?
Any URL (regardless of whether it is 10 or 100 characters long) is automatically shortened by Twitter to a t.co link that consumes exactly 23 characters.
Why do emojis and Chinese/Japanese/Korean characters count as 2?
Twitter weights characters based on screen display width and informational density. East Asian characters and emojis take twice the visual width and convey more information per character, so they count as 2.
What is a tweet thread?
A thread is a series of connected tweets sent as replies to the first tweet, allowing users to publish longer stories or analyses that exceed 280 characters.
