Board feet per piece: (2 in × 8 in × 10 ft) ÷ 12 = 160 ÷ 12 = 13.33 BF.

Total board feet (8 pieces): 13.33 × 8 = 106.67 BF.

Tips & Key Notes

  • Hardwood lumber is sold in quarter-inch thickness increments: 4/4 = 1", 5/4 = 1.25", 8/4 = 2", 12/4 = 3".
  • Remember that surfaced lumber (S4S) has smaller actual dimensions than nominal: a 2x4 is actually 1.5" × 3.5". Hardwood is often sold rough-sawn.
  • Add 15% to 20% waste when buying rough lumber to account for jointing, planing, knots, and sapwood defects.
