Asphalt Tonnage Formula

Worked Example
Scenario: Paving a 60 ft by 20 ft driveway with 2.5 inches of compacted asphalt surface course.
Square footage: 60 × 20 = 1,200 sq ft.
Square yards: 1,200 ÷ 9 = 133.33 sq yds.
Poundage: 133.33 × 2.5 in × 112 lbs/sq yd/in = 37,333 lbs.
Tonnage with 5% waste: (37,333 ÷ 2000) × 1.05 = 19.60 US tons.
Tips & Key Notes
- Asphalt must be delivered hot (between 275°F and 300°F); never attempt to install cooled asphalt under 220°F as it will not compact properly.
- A strong aggregate gravel base (minimum 4 to 6 inches) is essential; asphalt provides a water-resistant wear course but relies on the base for load support.
- Allow freshly paved asphalt to cure for at least 3 days before parking passenger vehicles on it, and 6 to 12 months before applying sealcoating.
