Bits-to-Bytes Bandwidth Formulation

T = \frac{\text{FileSize (Bytes)} \cdot 8}{\text{Speed (Bits/sec)}} \cdot 1.05

There are 8 bits in 1 byte. A 1.05 factor (5%) accounts for standard TCP/IP packet header encapsulation overhead.

Worked Example

Scenario: Downloading an 80 GB video game on a 100 Mbps internet connection.

80 GB = 80,000 MB = 640,000 Megabits (Mb).

Speed: 100 Mbps = 12.5 MB/s raw transfer rate.

With 5% network protocol overhead: ~11.9 MB/s.

640,000 Mb ÷ 100 Mbps = 6,400 seconds × 1.05 = 6,720 seconds.

6,720 seconds = 1 hour, 52 minutes.

Result: Estimated download time is approximately 1 hour 52 minutes.

  • ISP advertised speeds are in Megabits per second (Mbps), while file sizes are in Megabytes (MB). Divide Mbps by 8 to get approximate MB/s.
