Ultradian Sleep Cycle Formula

Where n is the integer number of completed 90-minute sleep cycles, with 14 minutes of initial sleep onset latency.

Worked Example

Scenario: An adult needs to wake up alert at 07:00 AM.

Target wake: 07:00 AM.

6 cycles (9.0 hrs sleep + 14m latency): Bedtime is 09:46 PM (Optimal).

5 cycles (7.5 hrs sleep + 14m latency): Bedtime is 11:16 PM (Optimal).

4 cycles (6.0 hrs sleep + 14m latency): Bedtime is 12:46 AM (Acceptable).

Result: Optimal bedtimes are 09:46 PM or 11:16 PM for peak morning alertness.
